Traveling South to Discover Tainan City

Last updated on December 7th, 2016 at 06:10 pm

From Taipei, I traveled south to the old capital of Taiwan, Tainan City. Every year, tourists visiting to Tainan city are getting more. Over here, it’s all about experiencing and learning culture of ancient Taiwan.

Tainan City is a place with well-preserved culture, historical relics, centuries-old temples, several museums of different architectural facade, and many more.

To discover Tainan City for places of interests, online information are aplenty. For this trip, I would be bringing you to discover some of the shops with English-speaking salesperson.

I had visited to some of the shops, cafes and a dinning place for pizza. For some of the shops, I chanced upon the owners whom happened to be there. We shared and exchanged our cultural values.

Below, I have briefly described my visit to Tainan City.

1. Narrow Door’s Café (窄門咖啡)

This cafe has a unique characteristic of not just the traditionally old interior design, but also a rather small main entrance. Well, it’s literally an elbow-length wide.

If this Narrow Door’s Cafe (窄門咖啡) is to a classic book on a wooden shelf; its main entrance would be the hardcover of the small book. Therein, pages of untold stories bind together awaits for readers to discover.

I had an opportunity to meet up with the lady boss, Jessica Tseng. She’s a gentle lady whom we had coffee and a good talk on her works at Narrow Door’s Cafe (窄門咖啡).

She shared about how she encountered this place in late 1990’s and the revamp of the cafe’s foundation structure to improve and preserve the cafe to its utmost original states.

This brief introduction isn’t enough to cover the entire stories. More would have to share on my next written post.

Location: 2F., No, 67, Nanmen Road, West Central District, Tainan City.

2. Cao’s Bread (曹師傅の麵包坊)

In Tainan city, to find a shop with an English name is rare. Cao’s Bread (曹師傅の麵包坊) is exceptional. Name of this bakery shop is short and easy to remember.

Moreover, all breads are freshly baked with natural yeast. Fruits are added during yeast production. For some premium choices of bread, this adds a subtle taste of fruity flavor.

Cao’s Bread bears the surname of Master Chef Cao. Yes, he was there to have a short introduction and exchanges of valuable discussion. He shared about how he started the second shops and the process-making of all the bakery food.

More to come on the next written post.

Location: No. 123. Sec 3 Chang Rong Road, East District, Tainan City.

3. La Gatita Handmade Soap (舞皂)

The moment I stepped into this nicely decorated shop of La Gatita Handmade Soap (舞皂), a symphony of fragrances gently breezed upon me. Triggering a sudden surge of olfactory sensors out from nowhere, or as if there were picked up from the fresh floral meadow in the highlands.

It smells pretty and feminine. The ideal soap shop where boys buying fresh scented gift to girls.

Once again, I met up with the shop owner, Ms Lee, who wore a casual petite outfit and a denim shorts on that day. She’s a nice person to talk to and preferred to call her by the fitting moniker, XiaoMeow (小喵).

Location: No. 94, Sec 1, Fuqian Road, West Central District, Tainan City

4. Mr. NO Q Pizza House

“It’s New York-style pizza…”, said John, owner of Mr. NO Q Pizza House. We met that day and had a short conversation with him while dinning in his open-concept restaurant located at Datong Road, West Central District.

Indeed, large pizza with crispy thin-crust pies, 18 inches wide, four different toppings, each on a quarter-cut. Double Cheese, Pepperoni, Hawaiian and Chicken Onion. Vegetarian toppings available on the easy-to-read English food menu.

Location: No. 525, Sec. 1, Datong Road, West Central District, Tainan City

5. Mi727 Optical Co. (久必大眼鏡)

During my visit to Tainan’s Confucius Temple, I had my pair of glasses accidentally damaged. Being shortsighted, I cannot go to places without it. My Taiwanese friend was kind to help me out. She brought me to Mi727 Optical Co. located along Fuqian Road, near Confucius Temple.

As you can see, this shop is spoiled with choices of designer’s spectacle frames and optical lenses. Spoke to a friendly salesman who has the patience to provide service to any foreigners.

The salesman was able to speak fairly reasonably English Language. He asked the essential questions to get the hint of what I actually looking for.

He would first ask the material of eyeglass frames be plastic, Japanese celluloid, stainless steel or titanium frames.

The question also leads to the type of frames. The wide range of fashionable designs with half-frame, full-frame, frame-less, thin, lightweight or handmade.

Patience is a virtue when dealing with customer like me whom Chinese language is really poor.

Location: No. 409, Sec. 1, Fuqian Road, West Central District, Tainan City.

6. Ecoful Eco Ranch (益可福生態牧場)

Last Friday at Basement 2 of Shin Kong Mitsukoshi department store, I walked past Ecoful Eco Ranch (益可福生態牧場) and met a lady salesperson.

She was wearing a floral apron, portraying herself with a motherly-like figure exchanging friendly smiles to passerby. Her sociable manner was natural, as if you are already her neighbor next door.

This particular store sells all the organic food packed with health benefits. A small store with freshly-cut and vacuum-packed organic beef, poultry, seafood and some vegetables.

Organic product requires more laborious processes than those that are mass produced in the farm. Variety of products, however, having smaller quantity in production.

One important aspect of organic food production is its free of artificial additives or methods, materials and conditions, such as chemical ripening, food irradiation, and genetically modified ingredients.

Location: No. 658, Sec. 1, Ximen Road, West Central District, Tainan City. (Shin Kong Mitsukoshi department store B2F, Area B)

7. Kaofeng Wood (高豐木業)

Location: No.103, Sec. 1, Lin’an Rd., West Central Dist., Tainan City.  Tel: 886-6-2592173

All these shops mentioned above are worthy of your visit. There have trained employees who are able to communicate with customers using spoken English at a reasonably level.

There have written introductory of product in dual languages. So, it has been very useful for those who couldn’t read Chinese at all.
